Lesson Title/ Topics: Part of Industrial Growth and Expansion unit: Modes of Transportation, and advantages and disadvantages of modes of transportation.
 

Summary: Students are learning about various transportation used during 1800s. They will create infographic explaining the advantages and disadvantages.
 

Technology Skills: If students have not used Inspiration, Kidspiration, or iWork before, they will be given an introduction to it during their technology class.
 

Materials: Inspiration, Kidspiration, and/or iWork.

Objectives:

Students will understand that:

1.) During the 1800s, new inventions changed the ways Americans traveled and   communicated with each other.
2.) In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the number of immigrants coming to New York State and the United States increased dramatically.
3.) People migrated to the United States for such reasons as poverty, hunger, and/or a lack of freedom in their homelands.
4.) Immigrants made important contributions to New York State and the United States of America.
5.) The Industrial Revolution significantly changed the way goods were made, and services delivered.
6.) There were many geographic reasons why New York State became a leading manufacturing center.

Essential Questions:
1.) How did advances in transportation, communication, and technology in the 19th century change the United States?
2.) How did changes in transportation affect industrialization and expansion?
 

At the end of the lesson students will know and able be to:
1.) Understand modes of transportation: Erie Canal, railroads, steamboats, turnpikes, etc. As we are discussing various modes of transportation, pictures will be projected on the SmartBoard.
2.) Reasons for migrating.
3.) Advantages and disadvantages of traveling by steamboats, roads, and canals.
4.) We will look at the book Early Travel by Bobbie Kalman and classroom textbooks to understand the main ideas of Industrial Growth and Expansion.

Assessment:

1.) Students will pick a mode of transportation and list the advantages and disadvantages. Then they will create infographics that illustrates the advantages and disadvantage of the transportation during 1800s. They can use Inspiration, Kidspiration, or iWork.
2.) Class discussions and teacher observations will additionally aide in developing student understanding.
